My water bill jumped and nothing changed. What should I check?
A sudden spike almost always means water is going somewhere you cannot see. Check toilets first — a leaking flapper is the most common culprit and makes no noise. Then faucets, the water heater, and any irrigation. If the meter still turns with every fixture shut off, the leak is in a supply line and needs locating before it does damage.
How do I keep my pipes from freezing in a Tennessee cold snap?
Insulate any pipe running through a crawlspace, garage or exterior wall, seal the drafts that let cold air reach them, and keep the thermostat steady overnight rather than setting it back. On the coldest nights, opening cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls and running a slow trickle at the furthest fixture is cheap insurance.
Why is my water pressure dropping?
Start with the cheapest cause: unscrew the aerator on the affected faucet and clear it. If pressure is low everywhere, the likely causes are a failing pressure regulator, a partly closed main valve, scale in older galvanized pipe, or a problem on the supply side. A pressure test at the hose bib narrows it down quickly.
How do I know if I have a hidden leak?
The reliable signs are an unexplained rise in the water bill, damp or musty patches on floors and walls, a warm spot on a slab floor, and the sound of running water with everything turned off. The definitive test: note the meter reading, use no water for two hours, and read it again. If it moved, you have a leak.
Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use?
We would avoid them. They generate heat and can damage older pipes and seals, and they usually bore a narrow channel through a clog rather than clearing it, so it closes again. A plunger or a hand auger is safer and works more often. If neither clears it, the blockage is further down the line than a chemical will ever reach.
What does hard water actually do to my plumbing?
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Those minerals come out of solution as scale inside pipes, water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines — narrowing the pipe, insulating the heating element, and shortening the life of every appliance that heats water. A softener removes the minerals before they get that far.
When should I replace my water heater instead of repairing it?
Replace it if the tank body itself is leaking — that cannot be repaired. Replace it if it is past about ten years and showing rust-coloured water, rumbling, or a steady drop in how long the hot water lasts. If the tank is sound and the fault is a thermostat, element, thermocouple or valve, repair is usually the better value.
My toilet runs constantly. Can I fix it myself?
Often, yes. A toilet that never stops filling is nearly always a flapper that is no longer sealing or a float set too high, and both are inexpensive parts. If the flapper is new and it still runs, the fill valve or the flush valve seat is worn — that is when it is worth a call.
